How to Download and Install CentOS on Your Laptop

Step 1: Check System Requirements

Before you begin, ensure your laptop meets the following minimum hardware requirements for CentOS:

  • Processor: 1 GHz or faster
  • RAM: Minimum 1 GB (2 GB or more recommended)
  • Disk Space: Minimum 10 GB (20 GB or more recommended)
  • Network: Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection for updates and packages

Step 2: Download CentOS ISO

  1. Visit the CentOS Website:

    Go to the official CentOS website: CentOS Downloads.

  2. Choose the Version:

    Select the version of CentOS you want to download. The latest version is recommended for new installations.

  3. Select the ISO File:

    You will see different options (DVD ISO, Minimal ISO, etc.). For a full installation, choose the DVD ISO.

  4. Download the ISO:

    Click on the link to download the ISO file. This may take some time depending on your internet speed.

Step 3: Create a Bootable USB Drive

You will need a USB drive (at least 8 GB) to create a bootable installation media.

  1. Download Rufus (for Windows):

    If you are using Windows, download Rufus from Rufus Website.

  2. Insert USB Drive:

    Plug in your USB drive to your laptop.

  3. Open Rufus:

    Launch Rufus. It should automatically detect your USB drive.

  4. Select the ISO File:

    Under "Boot selection," click on "SELECT" and choose the CentOS ISO file you downloaded.

  5. Start the Process:

    Click on "START" to create the bootable USB drive. Confirm any prompts that appear.

  6. Wait for Completion:

    Once the process is complete, safely eject the USB drive.

Step 4: Boot from USB Drive

  1. Restart Your Laptop:

    Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings. This is usually done by pressing a key like F2, F10, DEL, or ESC during startup (the exact key depends on your laptop manufacturer).

  2. Change Boot Order:

    In the BIOS/UEFI settings, find the boot order settings and set the USB drive as the first boot device.

  3. Save and Exit:

    Save the changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI settings. Your laptop should now boot from the USB drive.

Step 5: Install CentOS

  1. Welcome Screen:

    After booting from the USB, you will see the CentOS welcome screen. Select "Install CentOS" and press Enter.

  2. Select Language:

    Choose your preferred language and click "Continue."

  3. Installation Summary:

    You will see the Installation Summary screen. Here are the key options to configure:

    • Date & Time: Set your timezone.
    • Keyboard: Choose your keyboard layout.
    • Installation Destination: Select the hard drive where you want to install CentOS. You can choose to use the entire disk or create custom partitions.
    • Network & Hostname: Configure your network settings and set a hostname if needed.
  4. Begin Installation:

    Once you have configured the settings, click on "Begin Installation."

  5. Set Root Password:

    While the installation is in progress, set a strong password for the root user.

  6. Create User:

    Optionally, create a new user account for regular use.

  7. Complete Installation:

    Wait for the installation to complete. This may take some time. Once done, you will see a message indicating that the installation is complete.

  8. Reboot:

    Click on "Reboot" to restart your laptop.

Step 6: Post-Installation Setup

  1. Remove USB Drive:

    When prompted, remove the USB drive and press Enter.

  2. First Boot:

    Your laptop will boot into CentOS. Log in with the root account or the user account you created.

  3. Update System:

    Open a terminal and run the following command to update your system:

    sudo dnf update
  4. Install Additional Software:

    You can install additional software as needed using the dnf package manager.
